Ottawa is the capital city of Canada, situated on the eastern portion of southern Ontario. It has the highest standard of living in the nation and a very low unemployment rate. It has been ranked second nationally and 24th worldwide in the quality of life index, and it is consistently rated as the best place to live in Canada. In addition to being a great place to live, it is also a wonderful vacation destination.
Over one million people travel to Ottawa in the wintertime, and most of them visit for the same reason: skating on the Rideau Canal. The famous, 4.8-mile-long skateway is active in January and February. Skaters and visitors can take in views of the surrounding parliament buildings, the Chateau Laurier hotel, and the stunning scenery around the city.
Moreover, weekends in February are home to Winterlude—the annual seasonal celebration wherein chalets appear along the canal selling hot chocolate, maple taffy, and other treats. This festival contributed to the city’s receiving of the IFEA “World Festival and Event City Award” in 2010. If you want to get your winter vacation in earlier in the season, visiting Ottawa during Christmastime is a wonderful occasion for a vacation. The city’s Christmas displays are some of the best we’ve seen.
A great city in and of itself, Ottawa is a wonderful destination in every season. ByWard Market, Parliament Hill, and the Golden Triangle are the focal points of the city’s cultural scene, and modern thoroughfares such as Wellington Street, Elgin Street, and Bank Street provide everything from award-winning restaurants to independently-owned boutiques. With museums, concert venues, historic architecture, and heritage sites, you cannot go wrong when visiting this beautiful city.
